- Hours of Work: Average of 40 hours per week (i.e. may work 36 hours one week, 48 hours the next week); must be willing to work up to 12 hour rotating shifts in a 24 hour/ day, 365 day/ year operation, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and statutory holidays.
- Salary: As of January 1, 2015, a Constable-in-Training at the Ontario Police College (OPC) earns $55,146/ annually. Upon graduation from OPC, members will become 4th Class Constables earning $64,336/ annually. As a 1st Class Constable, you can earn $91,909 to $100,183/ annually.

General Duties
- Improve and maintain the safety, security, and quality of life for residents of the City through the application of proactive community-based and problem-solving policing methods
- Preserve the peace
- Prevent crimes and other offences, and provide assistance and encouragement to other persons in their prevention
- Assist victims of crime
- Apprehend criminals and other offenders and others who may lawfully be taken into custody
- Lay charges and participate in prosecutions
- Execute warrants that are to be executed by police officers and perform related duties
- Perform the lawful duties that the Chief of Police assigns
Applicant Requirements
To be considered for a Police Constable position candidates must:
- Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Have a Grade 12 High School Diploma, or the approved equivalent
- Have a valid Class G Driver's Licence, with no more than six accumulated demerit points, permitting you to drive an automobile in Ontario with full driving privileges
- Have a current Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) Certificate of Results, including current Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (PREP) throughout the recruitment process
- Visit the Applicant Testing Services (ATS) website for further details and/ or see the Hamilton Police PREP Test on YouTube for a video demonstrating the components of the PREP test; currently serving police constables are exempt from this requirement
- Vision standards are as follows:
- uncorrected visual acuity of at least 20/40 (6/12) binocularly (both eyes open); or
- corrected visual acuity of at least 20/20 (6/6) binocularly; and
- there are minimum requirements regarding refractive surgery, farsightedness (hyperopia), colour vision, depth perception and peripheral vision. With regards to laser surgery and Intra-Ocular lenses, acceptable, but applicants must meet specific standards.
- hearing is acceptable if the applicant is able to hear tones at the following frequencies and related decibel levels:
- four-frequency average (500, 1000, 2000, 3000 Hz) of 25 dB HL;
- thresholds at none of these single frequencies shall exceed 35 dB HL and thresholds at 4000 Hz shall not exceed 45 dB HL.
- candidates may also be required to undergo a speech recognition test as part of their hearing assessment.
Additional Non-mandatory Qualifications
- Current resident of the City of Hamilton or live within a 45 minute drive of downtown Hamilton, or have knowledge of Hamilton by virtue of having lived, attended school, or have family living in Hamilton
- Post-secondary College or University graduate
- Commitment to continuous learning/self-improvement within the past two to five years (i.e. post-secondary courses, workshops, seminars, or any ongoing personal development activity)
- Commitment to community involvement within the past two to five years (i.e. volunteering)
- Stability in work and/ or education within the past two to five years (i.e. engaged in schooling or demonstrated stability in employment)
- Strong attention to detail (i.e. do not exclude yourself as a potential candidate by submitting a poorly presented application with spelling, grammar, or accuracy errors)

- Complete Application and upload your resume and OACP certificate
- HR will email you a Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ) to be completed within 48 hours of receipt.
- Interview Day – You may be invited to participate in the first Interview Day at HPS. This will include:
- A written component
- An Informational Interview
- A Behaviour Based Panel Interview
