A recreational vehicle (RV) bill of sale is a document that is used to transfer ownership of a motorhome, trailer, fifth-wheel, or camper from one person to another. It contains the contact information of both parties, as well as a description of the RV, and the payment details.
Once signed, the seller is no longer liable for the property. Instead, the buyer is responsible for titling, registration, repairs, and other associated fees. The only exception is if the seller did not tell the buyer about accidents that it has been involved in, or repairs that the RV requires. In this case, the seller must pay for the damages, even if the sale has already occurred. If they do not pay, the buyer may be able to sue them.
An RV bill of sale confirms that a seller sold a motorhome or trailer to a buyer. It is an important document in the selling process as it contains specific details about the RV, such as its condition and sale price. It also provides the name, address, email address, and phone number of the buyer and seller so that they can be reached after the sale occurs.
This form is often requested during registration to prove ownership. In order for it to be accepted by the state, it must include signatures from both parties. Some states also require notarization.
Use the following five (5) steps to prepare, advertise, and sell an RV.
Preparing an RV before advertising makes it more likely to sell. The first step is to check for leaks since this is common in motorhomes and trailers. Ceilings, wood panels, and countertops are most often affected. Bubbled, soft spots are a sign that water has leaked and must be repaired prior to selling. Otherwise, mold and mildew can form, which will lower the value of the RV.
Next, it is important to clean the motorhome or trailer. The inside and outside must be free of stains, scratches, and dirt so it looks as new as possible. The interior needs to be free of odors, as well.
Before selling, the owner must gather the title, bill of sale, maintenance records, RV manual, and inspection. Showing this information to potential buyers builds trust and increases the chances of a sale.
By law, the seller must inform the buyer of repairs that the RV needs or accidents that it has been involved in. If the owner fails to include this information in the bill of sale, they can be sued.
The seller must set a realistic price for the RV. If it is priced too high then buyers will not be interested. Similarly, if the amount is too low, the owner will make a lower profit than they should.
Since it is crucial to set the right price, it is recommended that the owner have it appraised. NADA and PPL are commonly used to assess the value. Dealers or professionals provide estimates, as well, although they typically charge.
Additionally, sellers can appraise the motorhome or trailer. A reasonable price can be calculated by comparing the cost of similar models. They can also use the condition, mileage, age, size, special features, and brand to price it.
Quality photos and descriptions are key pieces of an advertisement. It is important to choose the right service using this information.
RV Trader is a popular platform as it has three (3) pricing plans. The “basic” choice costs $54.95, lasts for two (2) weeks, and includes (4) photos. The “enhanced” option is $109.95, keeps the listing up for eight (8) weeks, and allows for twenty (20) pictures and a video. Lastly, the “best” package is $199.95, one year long, and includes fifty (50) photos, a video, and a “featured” status in the search results.
Similarly, RVT is a website that is specific to RVs. The price ranges between $29.95 and $239.95 with the more expensive options including more features. For example, the least expensive option lasts thirty (30) days and allows for five (5) photos. The most expensive choice lasts until the RV is sold and includes an unlimited number of pictures.
Craigslist and eBay are commonly used to list and sell RVs online, as well.
Advertising in local areas, like campgrounds, is another approach. Owners can also hire a dealer or broker to sell the RV. This option is not as profitable, although it is less time-consuming.
Fill in the full name, address, email, and phone number of both parties under the sections labeled “Buyer” and “Seller.” This information makes it possible for the buyer and seller to contact the other after the sale.
In the “RV Info” category, include specific details of the camper, fifth-wheel, motorhome, or travel trailer. This section identifies the RV by its color, model, vehicle identification number (VIN), and more.
In the payment section, enter the sale price, included taxes, and the method of payment. If it was acquired by gift or trade, state the details on the line labeled “Additional Terms.”
Both parties must sign and date the bill of sale in order for it to hold value. While notarization is not required for an RV bill of sale, it is recommended to authenticate the document.
